  • A local nature reserve is a protected area of land that is of special natural interest and/or educational value.
  • Duchess Wood is the only local nature reserve in Argyll and Bute and 1 of 49 in Scotland.  
  • Like all local nature reserves, Duchess Wood was set aside for the purpose of nature conservation and for quiet recreation and education.

  • Duchess Wood is owned by Luss Estates and is leased to Argyll and Bute Council.  The lease is under re-negotiation at the moment.
  • Argyll and Bute Council are responsible for the management of Duchess Wood - see management for more information

Education and Recreation in Duchess Wood
Education       Recreation
Education: Duchess Wood is used by local schools for academic studies and for sport.  A schools teaching pack has also been developed for use by primary school teachers.
 
Recreation: Residents of Helensburgh and local villages as well as visitors to the area use Duchess Wood for walking, dog walking, running, mountain biking, horse riding and nature watching.
